Captain America (Chris Evans) was one of the leading characters in the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before saying good-bye in Avengers: Endgame. The character appeared in three solo films for the studio plus all of Marvel’s big crossover projects, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Although Evans has officially said goodbye to the MCU, Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently opened up about Cap’s most iconic line from the Infinity War Saga.

The Russo brothers open up about making another Captain America film

After successfully defeating Thanos (Josh Brolin) and bringing everyone back who perished in the first snap, Cap traveled back in time to put the Infinity Stones in their respective places. But instead of returning to the current timeline, he stayed in the past to live out his days with the love of his life.

Avengers: Endgame did not show Cap’s final mission. Instead, the character reappeared as an old man and handed over his iconic shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), a.k.a. Falcon. The ending was perfect for Cap, but it left fans wondering what happened when he put the stones back in place.

Although the Russos did not reveal what happened to Cap, the
directors did tease that the storyline could be featured in a future Marvel
film. According to Comic
Book Movie
, they also admitted that they would love to be the ones to tell that

“It would be a great story to tell, no question. I don’t know whether it needs to be told, but it would be a great story to tell, and we’d love to tell it, but I think there are other stories to move on to now.” Joe shared.

Marvel has not released any news about bringing Evans back after he bid farewell in Avengers: Endgame, but there is little doubt that the movie would be a big hit with fans. It could also provide an opportunity to bring other characters back into the fold, which is another big draw.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors always knew Cap would say this iconic line

While Evans’ time in the MCU is over for now, the Russo brothers were also asked about the actor’s iconic line from Avengers: Endgame. The line in question is straight out of the comics and features Cap saying, “Avengers assemble,” during a pivotal moment in the battle with Thanos.

There are other characters who could have been chosen to say
the iconic line, but for the Russo brothers, there was never any doubt that it
was going to be Cap’s moment.

“We really didn’t. We always felt like it needed to be Cap’s moment, and I’m not sure why, but for us, we always thought it was going to be Cap’s moment,” Joe stated.

The directors added that they never even discussed the possibility of another character saying the line. They also explained how their first movie was Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is why Cap was so important to the narrative.

Although Evans is no longer playing Cap in the MCU, his character lives on through Mackie, who is set to reprise his role as Falcon/Captain America in the upcoming Disney+ series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Speaking of Mackie, the Russo brothers recently addressed
the actor’s comments about the lack of diversity in the MCU.

recent comments on diversity

Marvel has done a good job being more inclusive in the MCU, but the studio still has work to accomplish on that front when it comes to jobs behind-the-scenes. According to Hindustan Times, Anthony Mackie recently addressed this issue about a lack of diversity and revealed that Marvel’s hiring practices are “racist.”

Mackie stated that every crew member he has ever met on a Marvel project has all been white. But in the Black Panther franchise, all of the costume designers, stunt people, personal assistants, and choreographers are all black.

In response to the comments, the Avengers: Endgame
directors confessed that everyone in the field of entertainment can do a better
job being more inclusive in the hiring process.

“I think we can always all do better at diversity constantly in this business, and in every facet of every industry – so he’s not wrong at all,” Joe stated.

Anthony added that he and his brother have a “ton of respect” for Mackie. He also noted that he is an “amazing actor” and someone who has been great collaborating with.

Fans can watch Mackie return to action when Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres on Disney+ in August.

Avengers: Endgame is available to stream on Disney+.
